Preview: Previous to Eminem’s comeback album “Relapse” dropping a few of the songs were making waves (3am, Old Time Sake feat Dr. Dre, and Crack A Bottle feat 50 Cent & Dr. Dre) With just hearing these few tracks I was not impressed. Crack A Bottle dropped first and Eminem was back to his old ways of making waves in the media by poking fun at stars currently holding some sort of spotlight. The other two tracks 3am and Old Time Sake didn’t really get me going, maybe 3am a little bit… but nothing I am going to brag about. Please see how my views have changed below…
01 - Dr. West (Skit) 01:29 Had to listen to this twice, I don’t know why Marshall hasn’t done more film work. He’s definitely got an acting itch; you can feel it through the skit for sure.
02 - 3am 05:20 Definitely a Dr. Dre beat when it kicks in, like I said in the above, was not impressed with the track, but it does grow on me the more and more I listen to it. He definitely has not lost his wordplay or his ability to sound like a psychopath; he goes off on butchery, dead bodies, and mass murdering. Label this Eminem track: Typical
03 - My Mom 05:20 The beat drops to this song… and I have to take a double take on the name of the track. The beat is up-tempo and when I think about Eminem talking about his mom, that track he did with Dido comes into my mind. He raps the whole track about his mom’s addiction to valium and other illicit drugs that I hope to try one day (J/K). Definitely a track you can bounce to, but as far as the theme and rap, probably would have through a different concept at it.
04 - Insane 03:01 “I was born with a dick in my brain, yea fucked in the head” He starts the track off with the line quoted… so again he touches on drug usage and for me overplayed it with pretty much three songs straight. The thing with Eminem though is that he can flip it so that he still relates and turns another mediocre song into a pretty good one, doesn’t hurt to have Dre on the beats as well.
05 - Bagpipes From Baghdad 04:43 This is where the CD gets good for me, one of my favorite songs… with a very slow intro with a few pipes and the Em intro… In addition what can you expect with a title like that I definitely didn’t expect what I heard? His first verse, Eminem blatantly takes shots at Mariah, Mariah and Nick, and Nick Cannon. As the song progresses in the second and third verses he takes more shots at the couple, but his voice really picks up on this track and like always takes you on a ride through a story he tells with his raps
1. Mafia Music 4:16 Through all the beef with Ross and 50, this was one of those tracks where I commended Ross for not folding to the Sitting on Millions rapper. Making this track #1 on the CD kind of baffled me... Note to all artists: Never start a CD with a diss track. Regardless this track has one of the nicest beats and you have the typical Rick Ross flow which will label this one a hit.
2. Maybach Music 2 (Feat. T-Pain, Lil Wayne And Kanye West) If you haven’t heard this, WOW! By far the most buzz surrounded this song, with a horrible quality of this song leaking about a week before the mastered version. Everyone kills this track, like they should… Instant classic.
Lark On My Go-Kart This song was one of the first to come out of his new album and created a nice buzz. I like the song, has that skateboard Melrose avenue theme. He mentions going to the malls, smoking blunts, Wii Fits, and even Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell. He comes off nice to this song; I can ride to it, definitely.
Blunt Cruisin' When I noticed the name of this song, I had super high hopes, because this is an everyday activity, you know what I mean. This song is definitely something I would not smoke to. Just doesn’t put me in that mood. I would much rather listen to I love College and put one in the air.
I Love College The song that put him in front of millions. I love college, this is the new college anthem, and if you have ever been to college you can put this song on and just vibe. I think he’s survived a lot off his image, but when you attach his image with this song, he creates a serious story that many people can relate to. Do something CRAZY! I love college, love it. Definitely the best song so far…
La Di Da o Umm, I might have a new favorite. Not for sure yet though, but this song I can definitely feel as I move my head back and forth to the beat. I will def be banging this song all summer “la di da da daaaa”. Flow is superb on this, definitely paints the picture of originality separating him from the rest… not in good way or a bad way but a different way. When u can’t take it… when u can’t take it any more, la di da da daaa” Definitely sometimes when life’s got u down throw this on and roll one.
Fallen He slows it down on this one, with a very simple beat, but his flow is true and his story is fluent. Don’t really like the hook “I don’t feel like I’m fallen… because I’m too fly”. My answer to that is that he’s not that fly yet, but this song is another great one.
Be By Myself (feat. Cee-Lo) This song leaked before the album leaked… but definitely kept the buzz. With Cee-Lo on any track you can expect something different and amazing which is exactly what this track exemplifies. Another amazing track, definitely something I will bump during BBQs, all summer.
She Don't Wanna Man This song makes me smile, because at the end of the day… She really doesn’t want a man. It’s a nice dance song with that fun feeling vibe. The flow is absurd and has its build up and its climax… the production and the people he has surrounding him are turning simple tracks into great songs.
Sour Patch Kids Kicks in like a Mario beat with a flow on a simple beat, but the content of the song is the real story. He speaks on hot topics like the economy, politics and more… with the hook “Take me away…. Take me away from here...” He kills it hard with this line, had to put this in the review… “Poverty is probably our biggest problem, and it ain’t going to stop with Obama, and to save the world we must start from the bottom” After running through this song a couple times, this might be my favorite.
As I Em (feat. Chester French) Another song that was pre-released before the album dropped and was creating a lot of buzz. Chester French kills this hook BTW, but he speaks from the heart on this one. He discusses the similarities between him and the other white rapper “LOL” Eminem. Claims he has no beef and says he paved the way for him all this and that and how he’s sick of the media making the comparisons. It’s not going to stop. Deal with it. Do your thing Asher.
Lion's Roar (feat. New Kingdom & Busta Rhymes) Busta has been back on his B.S. but nothing like this. He’s really expanded his game and you can definitely feel that on this track. Asher changes up his flow and speeds it up to ride the same way as Busta and doesn’t do to bad. Again putting a different spin on his style to show the people his talent. New Kingdom on the hook is amazing though, good song, great beat, great flow.
Bad Day (feat. Jazze Pha) It starts with you like “WTF is this?” This reminds me of another white rapper, umm Eminem. The difference is, he could have made the whole album like this and jocked his whole style, but kept it to just one of the tracks. Similar to a Dre beat, Em could murder this song, and should re-mix this if he was smart. So hilarious. A must listen to.
His Dream He switched it again, puts the slow mellow beat on and gets on something more important than music. He starts discussing the opportunity to do what you want to do, but sometimes kids, wife and etc… get in the way sometimes. With the title “His Dream” really tells the story of how all of us have dreams, and sometimes we don’t get to live them out but sometimes we do…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overview: With the whole album reviewed, I would say he absolutely made a worthy album to buy and listen to. He provides the listener with so many different emotions on one album and that’s what every song provides. His style changes from track to track providing the fun songs, the blunt music, to the soft dream music, and back to the inspirational lets keep it moving music. I will be rocking to this album all summer, I hope you will be to.
Shouts to all the Asher fans out there and Asher Roth for killing his first album, he will be here for a while get familiar.
